It is not neccssary that most elites understand the common folks suffering and their life expereince because from young these elites didnt expose to those upbringing hardship and experience, they have blind spots.

Here is not to promote a particular religion , but the letting go (less self-centred ) mentality. Similar mindset can be found in Catholic chanting and other mantras of spiritual well being. Once a person is less self-centred he will be more compassionate to other people, treat everyone the same, it is not based on one social hierarchy.
