2. Why public speaking is a No.1 fear

How to use sensory structure to recall speech content?

Stage fright, mind block , nervousness and all these elements contributed to public speaking as a number one fear.

Using "Sensory Structure" to solve a fear of public speaking.

Let's look at Simon's Sensory Structure:

A) Let's look at the speech memory components

ia) Where can we find the speech content in our brain?
Answer: It is stored in our subconscious mind.

ib) Where does the fear come from?
Answer: In short, the limbic system.

ii) When is the best time to retrieve the speech content?
Answer: It is available anytime. It does not govern by a physical constraint as it had become a long term memory. When you are relaxed you could recall the content.

iii) How to plan which key points, trigger words or key objects you needed for a speech?
Answer: Any interesting, irrelevant and funny things that can activate your memory.

iv) Who can help me to remember the speech?
Answer: You have to make an effort, trying new ways to do it.

v) Why I can't remember the speech content?
Answer: Because you always aim for perfection.

vi) How to overcome the mind block?
Answer: One of the ways is to use "Sensory Structure".

B) Speech preparation stage:

- Convert your speech ideas into written texts.
- From written texts convert them into pictures, images, objects, Props forms.
- Array them in a sensory structure.

C) Create a speech format which is ready to be delivered effectively using sensory structure below.

Steps to construct a sensory structure:
•Start in the centre of a landscape
•Use an image or picture for your central idea
•Use colour, picture throughout
•Connect branches to the central idea, etc.
•Make branches curve or flow
•just use one word per line

D) Deliver your speech:

Convert sensory structures into mental pictures.
Recall mental pictures, which means that you are speaking top from your "brain".

When you put the picture of sensory structure in your mind, you would enjoy the benefits of speaking without referring to scripts or notes. You would have better eyes contact and better body movement and pacing while speaking in a platform.

Start to apply the above steps on public speaking. You will enjoy public speaking when you deliver a well crafted speech* next time.

The training usually starts in first week of April every year.

The upcoming speechcraft is in its 22nd run will be held in April, 2012. An Ideal participant number is 15 and above. Raja Kumar is the master trainer.

We volunteer to conduct this workshop every year together for ccktmc with a few experienced toastmasters.

NB:

I write this blog, Sensory Structure (SS) is for future Speech Craft participants to access my presentation material on-line.

Sensory Structure is another powerful visual tools which helping you deliver a well crafted speech. Since SS is associated with right brain activity hence it will help you retrieve and recover your speech faster, with less efforts, and it is also a good memory tool for you so that it ehnahces your limited "7 bytes" short digital memory span when you just use words alone.

There are many good examples on lines, here, there is other example of presentation by the use of flip charts visually. Use appropriate tools and props to communicate your ideas across to the audience...
