153. Dragon Year of 2012

Sometimes when we have inappropriate technology or methodology or belief, and that makes life more challenging. My next blog post would appear here in late June 2012.

152. Thank You Neuroscientists & EEG Biofeedback Pioneers

Image
Neuroscience has been advanced into a very high level of brain science. There are many neuroscience gurus now as compared to fifteen years ago where we had less knowledge in this area. Many neuroscientists explain well the working mechanism of neurons inside the brain and I particularly like Prof. Dale Purves simplified version. Let's look at some ideas from on what happen inside our neurons by Prof Purves and Augustine findings: 1) Transmitter is synthesized and then stored in vesicles. 2) An action potential invades the presynaptic terminal. 3) Depolarization of presynaptic terminal causes opening of voltage 4) influx of ca2+ through channels 5) Ca2+ causes vesicles to fuse with presynaptic membrane 6) Transmitter is released into synaptic cleft via exocytosis ... Neuroscience is a branch out of medical science, it further developed into neuroimaging and many advanced techniques . However, there is another branch of science it is called brainwave neurofeedback or EEG biofeedback.

151. THE SECRET OF LONGEVITY

Image
Asian Scientist (Dec. 14, 2011) –" Singapore’s oldest person, Teresa Hsu Chih (许哲), has died at the age of 113. She passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday 7, December 2011. Hsu was born into poverty in Guangdong in 1898 but rose to become one of Asia’s most beloved and inspirational social workers in Singapore. She started studying nursing after World War II, at the age of 47. She later founded the Heart to Heart Service and the Home for the Aged Sick in Singapore, and her contributions to charity earned her the Public Star in 2009. According to a notice on the Heart to Heart website, Hsu had requested that no media announcement be made, and that no rituals or ceremonies be conducted. Hsu was cremated that day and instructed that no claim be made of her ash." In 2005 I went for her talk on a topic which interest many people. A secret of longevity. As an eager audience I saw her walkup the stage without any walking aid. She was 107 then. After a long introductory by the

150. Moon Eclipse and the Life Formation

Image
This picture on the right below was taken by Jeremiah L T Chen @102257h I saw Orion, venus and a cheese ball in the air. Moon eclipse is the shadow of earth produces by the sun which projected on the moon. The eclipse lasted a few hours. It started after 8pm and ended at 11pm on Dec 9, 2011. In my childhood days although we knew the truth of moon eclipse but the elders passed down the idea of celestial dog bites the moon. In those days we had fun by hitting the gong loud, chased away the sky (heavenly) dog (天狗食月) . When we get older, some of my friends become more emotional. I hope we will be more logical and scientific in understand our universe and the nature. In science there is no place for superstitious and biased views. This year we see a slightly red moon. When we see a red moon, we are seeing the red light that wasn’t scattered, but the blue and green light have been scattered away back to the space. That’s why the Moon looks red. In the wavelength spectrum a slower red light

149. An Artificial Mountain

Image
When we went on climb Mt. Rinjani in Indonesia last year, a life volcanoic mountain near Bali area, we received a momentary comment from a rest-house owner, he said that Singaporeans were one of the slowest trekkers' groups in the world. Yes it is nerve breaking revelation but I did not dispute that statement as our island country state has only a hill which stands at 160m, it is called Bukit Timah hill, "the highest mountain". For mountain climbing enthusiasts, now we have a solution for those we have the desire to scale highest mountains. You can start training at our aritifical mountains all over the country, or in many countries. If your want to have a summit climb of 1000m within a day, you can simulate a situation by climbing 10 rounds of 40 floors' high rise building. But there is one problem that we have not really found a right solution, ie Mountain sickness. Nontheless this artificial mountain training regime would provide us improvement in heart rate variab

148. Unintentional Act

Image
Nature takes care of plants & flowers. It makes them grow so well without extra human intervention. “ 有心栽花花不开,无心插柳柳成荫” Resonance with the nature, it controls the timing and opportunity. Unintentional act may provide a better outcome after all. Nature favours pure, noble and good intention rather than greedy, selfish and self-centred act. Know the nature, harmonised with nature and grow with the nature.

147. Walk the run

Image
Walk the walk, talk the talk , run the run, Now walk the run. Tomorrow is my mini-marathon run. I aim to be in top 5% of the race out of 16000 participants. I aim for a run record time of 1 hour for a 10km race. My body, brain and mind are ready for this event. Now, Walk the run. Finally my race result is out Time : 1:01:07 ,Dec 4 2011 SC Marathon, 10km Point, Time, Time of Day, Pace, START 00:00:00 7:15:04 am --4K 00:24:54 7:39:58 am 06:14 FINISH 01:01:07 8:16:10 am 06:03 Avg. Before answering How, we need to address Why and How all together. With W_SWOT analysis; ask questions as Why (W) we are doing it and also doing asking SWOT (How) analysis for an event. After many rounds of asking Why and How. For examples, listen to our body ,listen to our feeling, listen to our mind, and listen to our divine. Human being are not made of stee

146. Starting From 2012+ : My New Year, New Century Resolutions

Image
This is our only Earth. Year 2012 is not the end of the world. It is the beginning of a new century. Mayan calendar hinted that the world will come to an end in 2012 Many people worried about that but I don’t think so, because a big meteor,a size of 3football fields has left the earth orbit few days ago. We are lucky this time.Thank You for Mayan Blessings. We may not be so lucky next time. Our internal weaknesses are more serious than external threats. We may not survive with our own weaknesses If we don’t use our resources properly We may not be so lucky next time If we don’t reduce our defense budget by half We may not be so lucky next time If we don’t reduce world population by half We may not be so lucky next time If we don't reduce self-centred government agencies by half We may not be so lucky next time If we are wasteful in using our limited resources again and again We may not be so lucky next time If we have right passion but with wrong direction May we promote creativity

Image
We can let go a golf ball, We can let go a tennis ball, We can even let go a basketball, But we can not afford to let go a glass ball All balls are made of materials All balls are important to you But a glass ball is made of life 80+ is vulnerable 40+ is vulnerable and even 20+ is vulnerable Keep the glass ball on hand Put all balls aside At the most take another ball with you

143. I-ching and the life of origin

Image
I-Ching (sounds yijing), meaning a book of changes (nature or human event) They are many ways in which humans interpret the creation of universe and the behavious of human society. I-ching and science are two fundamental aspects of explanation. I-Ching was a tool used in an ancient Chinese especially for weather forecast. The lack of research had made it downgraded to a tool for fortune telling. I learned I-Ching at age of 27; the learning outcome was full of frustration because I did not know the way of learning. Years later when I knew that Confucian mastered I-Ching at age of 50, this made me feel better. Nowadays I am happy even I don’t understand I-Ching as I am more appreciative then before. The power of I-Ching in Maths and Computing, a binary system of 0,and 1 which makes a revoultion of scientific world. The power of 64 bits computing technology is not fully developed, less alone the full power of I-Ching 64bits*64bits technology in future development. In huamnity front I coul

Live your dream, live your dream! Ask what is your dream Ask where is your dream Ask when you start your dream Focus your dream Live your dream A tiny little young bird flapping its wings A tiny little young bird growing day by day You will be there Up in the blue sky Focus your dream Live your dream

141. Wisdom

Wisdom and a high level of wisdom are beyond the reach of human being. I will try to explain the meaning of wisdom. A person who has wisdom is the person who would not be happy with how rich he is or how rich he would become, how many properties he has, with more future job promotion, and more power. He would only think of helping other people, making other happy. He would have less desire on earthy things. In reality, he has no self. – No Self. Yes, no self. Look at Lord Jesus, he has three forms; trinity. Lord Shiva has multiple hands and heads. Therefore they are in a different state of understanding of the real world. God has WISDOM and God has no setback. Buddha was not a god. Buddha developed a high level of wisdom. Buddha eightfold paths penetrate religions. Eightfold paths are grouped into wisdom, morality and concentration. The wisdom in buddhism that is based on the direct realization of such things as the four noble truths, impermanence, interdependent origination, non-self

140. Lucid Dreaming

Image
A lucid dream is a dream in which one is aware that one is dreaming. The term was coined by the Dutch psychiatrist and writer Frederik (Willem) van Eeden (1860–1932).[1] In a lucid dream, the dreamer can actively participate in and manipulate imaginary experiences in the dream environment.[2] Lucid dreams can seem real and vivid.[3]" - wikipedia An older record of lucid dream was cited in Zhuangzi 2400 years ago (400bce). In Zhuangzi dream, he transformed himself into a butttefy. When he woke up he wasn't sure whehter he was in a butterfly or a butterfly was in his body. - An highthened experience. "Zhuangzi dreaming of a butterfly (or a butterfly dreaming of Zhuangzi)Another well-known part of the book,is usually called "Zhuangzi dreamed he was a butterfly" (莊周夢蝶 pronounces as Zhuāng Zhōu mèng dié). Once Zhuangzi dreamt he was a butterfly, a butterfly flitting and fluttering around, happy with himself and doing as he pleased. He didn't know he was Zhuangzi

139. White Blood Cells

Image
Our immune system, and the world economy system are in difficult situations... As a personal level, we know our bodies need , white cells and red cells, when they are in a right mix, they complement each other. But too many of white cells over red cells are too bad for the body, i.e. the system degeneration. For example, the human body immune system malfunctions. So far the mankind has not found good panaceas for boosting body immune system yet. However, I find a simple solution to promote body immune system ie: Taking cold bath in the morning, simple. Try it for yourself. it works for me. Similarly, as a national level, running a government is like managing our own bodies. In a larger perspective, the system of government of the world is a white cell; there are too many white cells now. The world system of government is in a cross road. Communism has it flaws but the capitalism has a bigger flaw. It seems that we are living in a lost world. ie. uncontrollable spending and uncontrolla

138. ADHD and Fidgeting

Image
Here the meanings of fidgeting: v.intr. 1. To behave or move nervously or restlessly.2. To play or fuss; fiddle: He fidgeted with his notes while lecturing. v.tr. 1.To cause to behave or move nervously or restlessly. n. 1. A condition of restlessness as manifested by nervous movements. Often used in the plural with the.2. One that fidgets. Products innovation, new technological gadgets, big or small, are moving towards promoting "fidgeting"; our primitive response to stress. Any product which helps to bring people mind in focus, in attention or reducing stress would sell like hot cakes. When I look around in bus ,in train and in airpport, it seems that almost everyone who is holding a new electronic device, is "fidgeting" consciously or subconsciously. Think deeply, look around, and see for yourself, in office, outside office, unknowingly, are we also belong to one of these fidgeting communities?!! Here is a brief write up of ADHD and fidgeting on Time Magazine Heal

137. Humour

Image
Sunshine in a cup, but she hates Monday. What is humour or humor? "Humour or humor (see spelling differences) is the tendency of particular cognitive experiences to provoke laughter and provide amusement. The term derives from the humoral medicine of the ancient Greeks, which taught that the balance of fluids in the human body, known as humors (Latin: humor, "body fluid"), control human health and emotion." - wikipedia The basic rule of three of humour is buy putting a twist or a pun to the third element which evokes irrational or emotional response from the audience or listener: First we think that something is true, based on clues given to us, But then we are presented with further evidence, which shows that we were wrong, In fact we were so wrong, that there was something wrong with the thought process that leads to an initial conclusion. And at the end of this process, we feel pleasure. So the flow is: logical, logical, illogical or illogical, illogical, logical W

136. Three Fingers Method

Image
I use 3-finger method for the benefit of a group, I do not use it for myself or my company. Three Finger Method is a method used by Jose Silva; it is a basic course syllabus in Silva method. I learned it in 2003. Some time I shared with my closed friends casually. I called it managing coincident. For details, please look for qualified trainers in your area, i.e. Nancy in my area. This method is amazing and exciting but one thing I would like to comment is that after José Silva passed away, they did not do much further research into new discovery. Here I have three examples for 3-finger method: 1) When after 5 hours of trekking, everybody was so tired. In my mind...why not ask for a big van which can fetch us to a next destination where we can have our late lunch. Surprisingly it happened 2 times in two separate occasions, a 100% on target. Lorry and Big Van came within minutes after my calls. Managing coincident? I did not tell my friends about it until at a much later date. 2) After a

135. Climb That Tree

Image
“Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.” - Albert Einstein click it to enlarge picture and text I like Summit Momle's cartoon. Imagine that we are asked to perform an impossible task, set out by a system requirement. Again people are born differently, with given enough material incentive, people will try to imitate success people and behaviour. Even with limited knowledge of their own short-coming. In this picture,if there is a bait up on a tree, it is likely that almost all living things will go on pursuing their survival goals. They will try all efforts in achiving their goals. Some of them can still make it successfully and abandantly. In his case a bird and a monkey which can follow the system requirement would do it excetionally well, but for a fish to reach to the tree top, it has to do two things: Firstly it needs to jump out of a fish container, secondly it needs to face a live

134, A Centenarian ran a Marathon. Well Done.

Image
"For Marathoner; before during and after, take care of your legs." - simon kong He ran a marathon full race, 42.195km. We break our own record, We break other's record, We don't break record, We don't want to break record, People break our record... I have been running mini marathon for 8 years. In marathon, I think the next most important landmark is having a joy of breaking our personal records; try our best to meet life goals. It serves as a motivational factor, a lamp post for life. The main aim for exercise, ie Marathon, is to keep fit, even though our health conditions are not in perfect states. May Mr. Fauja Singh @London consider forming a running club for Centenarians, open membership for junior members to inspire them. Cheers. Marathon full race is not a laughing matter. It shows a person determination, patience and never say die attitude. I like an event Emcee humour: (Once we have started a race, 3 hours, 6 hours, 9 hours; keep going, complete the race

132. Keep Walking

Image
I look around me, people around me about my age, my friends of my age. Many of them have difficulty walking. But some of them still can run a full marathon. I do not know when I am going to join the former group. In the mean time, my winning formula is "Keep Walking" Friends, Readers who are divided by this simple statement, they have two major responses. People who practise faith they may take this idea and start to do somethings about it. Another group of logical people may not buy the idea. Well If you dont buy the idea, you have a choice. I have very strong reasons for this statement. If you want you can write it to me at amkong(at)singnet.com.sg Knees or angles should not be the limited factors preventing us from walking. Get someone who is stronger, who is more positive in life, ask him or her goes with you walking for another mile...

131. Live your dream

Image
Another big green apple has fallen after Sir Isaac Newton. A big loss to human civilisation. Steve job lived his dream. One of geniuses in our century who created computer technology to bridge the gap of communication among people all over the world so that we can connect to each other despite space and time constraints right at this moment. Unfortunately genius dies early. My sincere condolence. Steve Jobs went against the conventional concept and a look of a big boss. He was perfectionist and at the same time, a social visionary who can put ideas into product. " You have alreday naked, there is no reason not to follow your heart. Have a courage to follow your heart and intuition. Love what you do." - Steve Jobs In future, I believe Steve Jobs and Bill Gates should be given Nobel Prize winners for "Technology". Looking forward: Over emphasising paper qualification is counter-productive. The conventional technological and business schools produce graduates who have

130 Adaptation and Integration

Image
New immigrants need to put a national interest ahead of their race and religion belief when integrating to a new country. When immigrants come to this country, they bring in vitality but at the same time if the inflow of immigrant is so huge it may hindrance the integration process. For example: It takes a mind of one generation to adapt to a new environment and its culture and when the conditions are right and slow these new immigrants integrated well to the system. However when the inflow is too great within a short period of time the new immigrants in big numbers do not have a need or desire to integrate, instead they impose their habits and culture to the new country they went in. As a result conflict of mind is seen everywhere and crack begins to surface. Situation in this country, in Europe and in America is the same. In order to have a more stable country where everyone enjoys most, the only solution is to slow down the immigration process and impose 10 years rule for obtaining

129. Moral Character

Image
A way to have a good moral character is to train our children when they are young. -Simon kong To an organization, choosing a leader it can be easy tasks when it considers 4C of leadership trait i.e.: Confidence,Competency,Compassion and Character. Confidence: Look for his/her confident level which is a measurement of self-esteem. Give him an unknown task. The ways he/she respond will determine his/her confident level. Competency: Look for his/her competency level. The competency level is different from knowledge level. He might not have appropriate knowledge at the beginning but the competency level gets him through the challenge. The competency level is the ability to learn, the ability to accept setback and the ability to recognize priority. Compassion: Look for his/her compassion. Compassion is linked to life experience. Check what independent life experience one has before deciding his/her other credentials. Remember Future Potentiality and IQ test can be very misleading indicator

128. Challenge Brain, Body and Mind to their limits

Image
One way to challenge the unknown is to start a trekking trip. You meet the challenge along the way. Mt Kinabaru 2009 (L),Nepal ABC 2011, Live Volcanic Island;Mt Rinjani 2010 (R) Whether we are being happy or sad, people come and go; the earth does not rotate around us but it keeps rotaing on its own, 15years, 30years, 60years, 90years on and on. It is nice to spend sometime putting our footprints on earth and feel our lives real and vibrating. Focus on your legs... Next trekking destination join us next year if you want to... a huge challenge ahead. Mt. Kilimanjaro "Don't worry about knees problem even they are not in perfect condition. Start today perform any kinds of walking whether it be trekking; hiking; brisk walking or leisure walk, it is good for our legs, and our lives begin today " - simon kong

127. Productivity Mindset

Image
I learn the concept of productivity in a hard way. The experience learned from the Japanese were particually useful. In short productiivty is neither a hardware tool nor a built-in system which many of our people are addicted to this concept. Productivity must first starts with a change in mindset which requires mindfulness in every aspect of planning and execution stage. The concept of productivity or total quality management: Deming's 14 points are forgotten by many people. Let's do a recap of his quality concept: 1."Create constancy of purpose towards improvement". Replace short-term reaction with long-term planning. 2."Adopt the new philosophy". The implication is that management should actually adopt his philosophy, rather than merely expect the workforce to do so. 3."Cease dependence on inspection". If variation is reduced, there is no need to inspect manufactured items for defects, because there won't be any. 4."Move towards a singl

126. A Persuasive Speaker

In recent years, Mr. Obama has been facing uphill task in handling domestic issues. His image rating has been dropping day by day. However he gave one of his good speeches in addressing unemployment problem - Sept 07, 2011. "So let's meet the moment," he said, seeking to restore public trust in his leadership with a plan that mixes tax cuts and investments and takes aim at 9.1 percent unemployment which is threatening his 2012 reelection bid. A combative Obama, standing before a large US flag in the House of Representatives, said his American Jobs Act would get people back to work and put more money into the pockets of those who had jobs. "It will provide a jolt to an economy that has stalled.... You should pass this jobs plan right away. "I intend to take that message to every corner of this country." In my opinion, Mr. Obama in his summary needs one more sentence to complete the persuasion step as follows: 9.1% unemployment rate was not originated from th

125.How happy are we?

Let's do a simple happiness exercise. There are ten persons including you either you meet them in a meeting, or at a function or in a socail event. If out of the nine persons you met one is not happy. May I ask you how many people remain happy? Ans? If you can't get a convincing answer email me for an idea. Interestingly Bhutan measures sucesss by GNP. This GNP is Gross National haPPiness it is not our Gross National Product. I wish them well and prosperous in balanced life. They will. Happiness is 100 percent relational. Happiness is not a noun, it is not a verb, it is a conjunction of connective tissues.’ We have to all work to bring people to the table and create those relationships.” –Eric Weiner When focus on own-self to seek the journey of happiness then happiness will stay away from you forever. Happiness is linked to people around us – Lawrence Wong Happiness is communication with one's self, other and the environment. – Simon Kong

124. Hero Journey

Image
I attended a talk a few months ago given by my friend Boey TS. He introduced a hero journey. It is a very intersting topic for everyone to know it. Hero Journey is not just a goal setting exercise, it has a deep neurological structure in its plan so that it evokes a person conscious and subconscious mind. Hero Journey is very similar to Noble Goal of EQ Model. Again put all the noble goals aside, ask ourselves fundamental questions: What do we want to do in life? How much do you want to spend in life? Click inside the box to enlarge the view When a hero returns from his/her journey, he/she will bring in more heroes on board. "On a life stage, I make a difference." - Simon Kong

123. World Record 4*100m Men Relay

Image
Body training comes first. Mind coaching can come later. Training for 4*100m relay is more demanding than individual 100m race. First a runner needs to train a body and a mind later. However at a critical moment a mind fails the test as a passing of baton requires the mind to be cooled and well composed. If the mind is too focused one will fall or missed the passing of a baton. Expectation, Joy, Fear and Euphoria are all inside a runner mind. Congratulations. Usain Bolt, you have a Lightning Team. Your team is excellent. For American teams this is the second time they missed the baton since the Olympics 2008 in Peking. You have all the element of success. Try it again in different ways. Open and fare competition make the best out of individuals and not the other way round - Simon Kong

Here is a summary of what EEG Asia can do for people who believe in braniwave training and mind coaching. 121. Doing one thing at a time

Image
Multi-tasking is defined as the ability of a person to perform more than one task at the same time. I heard that multi-tasking is an important skill, people admiring multi-taking ability. Are we really talented in performaing multi-tasking role? For example: driving, looking at the road directory, smoking and listening to the handphone at the same time. Talking to the secretary, reading email and writing a short note at the same time. These are not multi-tasking. These are merely handling many tasks within a short span of time. The socalled Multi-tasking tasking can be done is because the tasks involved need very little attention or working memory. Infact multi-tasking would create errors for complex tasks due to insufficient attention pay to the detailed content. People in the world are carving for multi-tasking ability. Very few people know that ADHD people possess multi-taking skills. They can pay attention to many things at any time and yet the world labels them as having attention

120. Learn from the pain

Image
" I let go of bad feeling and choose to feel good" - John Selby We get experience by learning from others mistakes and by ourselves. However until we experience and feel the pains from the mistake made, we had not learnt from the experience. In other words when we made mistakes without paying for a price, or people paying the price for us and that experience can not consider as a true experience. When we made mistakes we usually fall into a negative loop of recurring pains. Methods or techniques which can resolve those pains are many. The purpose is to keep the experience of true neurons' connection but removing the bad feeling which associated with the experience. On a positive note, a person needs to keep going the momentum of life, stay away from being stagnant, and stay focus on target to prevent going down the slippery slope. Doing somethings out of routine would help to bring stressful and tearful life back to normal. Let's smiling and ready for a good night sle

119 Be humble

A very good virtue of human being is to be humble. This quality will serve us well in good time and in bad time. We tend to be arrogant or over confident due to past success or because of group expectation. So be humbe every time and this human quality need to be cultivated day by day.

118. A Charismatic Investor

Image
The making of an investor or a trader is an art... A trader or an investor needs to have information, calm and analytical mind, discipline and with the ability to act under pressure. However no body can match Warren Buffett's track record. People read his book and knew his principle of investing and now they witnessed this man put the understanding into action. This is what was reported: "Why now? Buffett tells Becky that BofA's shares "have gone down a lot" and the bank is "certain to be around" for a long time." "NEW YORK (Reuters) - Warren Buffett showed again that his name and money is enough to give a struggling company instant credibility in the market. But the legendary investor also demonstrated his canny command of that reputation means that such deals can immediately generate profits. Bank of America Corp on Thursday said Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway would invest $5 billion in the bank, the largest by assets in the United States

117. Sensory Acuity V_AD_A_K

People who are familiar with v ad a k term know that these are sensory acuity describes by NLP. NLP has been in existence for some 50 years. The founders of NLP are Richard Bandler, Robert Tilts and many pioneers. However people did not know that Chinese medical physicians are practcising v ad a k every day and over the last few thousand years of Chinese medicial history. The Chinese Doctors use 望(Look)、闻(Listen)、问(Ask)、切(Examine) is the equivalent of NLP v ad a k in practice. When I called myself Neurofeedback Practitioner some years ago, many people in my country mistaken it as NLP Practitioner. So the less confusion term now for my profession is called EEG Biofeedback Trainer and Mind Coach
