225. Memory Techniques

Memories are in the past and now we make use our memories which stored in a brain for the present living effectively, so learn these techniques before we are aged and incapable of recall memory. Memory are techniques which can be learned- Simon Kong

Why memory fails us?

It is because when we aged, brain size shrinking accordingly, brain hormones production reduces as neurons have become less and less in amount.

There are many memory trigger methods, today I recommend Journey Method below:

If our brains are good and sound at present then there is no need or urgency to use memory techniques as short term memory can do most daily memory function for us. However when we are getting older, short term memory can't work well even for 6 seconds retention power therefore learning of these memory techniques becomes useful. Learn them make it a habit before short term memory fails us soon like dementia patient.

The keys to memory trigger techniques are based on multiple sensory input & outputs with emphasis of exaggeration, vividness, imagery, colours, movement, imagination and combined habits all together. Here let's look at journey methods. ie Journey A_B_C, These journeys are train journey methods, each train station is a trigger point for memory recall. Total ABC, three train lines and with ABC train lines for us to anchors all the input signals, stored then retrieve them when it is necessary.

Journey Method

Journey A: North South Line

MRT Stations: Total 26 stations

1 Jurong East, 2 Bukit Batok, 3 Bukit Gombak, 4 Choa Chu Kang, 5 Yew Tee, 6 Kranji, 7 Marsiling, 8 Woodlands, 9 Admiralty, 10 Sembawang, 11 Canberra 12 Yishun, 13 Khatib, 14 Yio Chu Kang, 15 Ang Mo Kio, 16 Bishan, 17 Braddell, 18 Toa Payoh, 19 Novena, 20 Newton, 21 Orchard, 22 Somerset, 23 Dhoby Ghaut, 24 City Hall, 25 Raffles Place, 26 Marina Bay, 27 Marina South Pier.

Remember these 27 NS MRT train stations in names and sequence. You may group every three or four stations as one bundle, applicable in your own countries setting. You could also assign three objects linked to each station along the journey. Which means that you can remember 81 objects or even or people along the NS line train journey, this is amazing right.

Journey B: Circle Line

MRT Stations: Total 29 stations

1 Dhoby Ghaut, 2 Bras Basah, 3 Esplanade, 4 Promenade, 5 Nicoll Highway, 6 Stadium, 7 Mountbatten, 8 Dakota, 9 Paya Lebar, 10 MacPherson, 11 Tai Seng, 12 Bartley, 13 Serangoon, 14 Lorong Chuan, 15 Bishan, 16 Marymount, 17 Caldecott, 18 Botanic Gardens, 19 Farrer Road, 20 Holland Village, 21 Buona Vista, 22 one-north, 23 Kent Ridge, 24 Haw Par Villa, 25 Pasir Panjang, 26 Labrador Park, 27 Telok Blangah, 28 HarbourFront, 29 Bayfront

Journey C: Down Town Line

MRT Stations: Total 34 stations

1 Bukit Panjang, 2 Cashew, 3 Hillview, 4 Beauty World, 5 King Albert Park, 6 Sixth Avenue, 7 Tan Kah Kee , 8 Botanic Gardens, 9 Stevens, 10 Newton, 11 Little India, 12 Rochor, 13 Bugis, 14 Promenade, 15 Bayfront, 16 Downtown , 17 Telok Ayer, 18 Chinatown, 19 Fort canning, 20 Bencoolen, 21 Jalan Besar, 22 Bendemeer, 23 Geylang Bahru, 24 Mattar, 25 MacPherson, 26 Ubi, 27 Kaki Bukit, 28 Bedok North, 29 Bedok Reservoir, 30 Tampines West, 31 Tampines, 32 Tampines East, 33 Upper Changi, 34 Expo

Imagine that you link your new input information to the existing station which begins with a Journey A; Jurong East first station, add on one input item in which you want to remember, one at a time for each station until last station, Marina South Pier station then you would get a quick memory of 26 new items in Journey A travel. recall the station with the new object which you linked them. Remember to put in all necessary linkage points like colours, size, movement, exaggeration etc as mentioned above, that is helpful for memory recall later on when it is needed.

With that, you continue to travel through train Journey B and Journey C, to encode and decode memory processes.

Below are other memory methods:

Besides Journey Method, there are many other memory methods, for example a 12 digits number, one can use our natural short term memory, however 2 pairs of 12 digits number we have to use memory techniques which are based on Pegging, Mnemonics, Association, Sound, Visual, Exaggeration, Personification, Chunking, fun, "WRITE" and Mind map, Humour etc , we just need to find one that is suitable and convenient for us to use. Learn these techniques before short term memory fails us.

In summary, For learning Memory Techniques, we need our Extra Efforts putting in with routine rehearsed mental preparation until it becomes habits. All these techniques which require engagement of multiple sensory system of a brain, engage them concurrently, so as to keep the brain healthy and stay alive and relevant. For a new memory habit kicks in nicely we need to find reasons to do so and enjoy the fruits of implementing those new habits.
